April 2018 Newsletter

Hi everyone,

Here is our April newsletter and I hope you are all well. Our classes are going from strength to strength with many new members and a change to our class schedule. Since the last newsletter, we’ve had a successful Karate grading so a huge well done to all those that achieved their new belts.

I also have a seminar coming up in June focussing around trapping and stand up grappling again the details of this will be noted below.

  1. Jun Fan – Kickboxing
  2. Karate
  3. Mixed Arts
  4. YouTube Videos
  5. Seminars
  6. Changes to grading sheets

Jun Fan – Kickboxing

There has been a slight change to our Monday night schedule, the ladies only class has now morphed into a Jun Fan Kickboxing class for all. The venue and times are the same:
Junction 100, Chapel House Road, Birmingham, B37 5HA, Monday Evenings 7:00pm – 8:00pm

In the 1960/70s, the late Bruce Lee, with Dan Inosanto, researched every martial art they could – what emerged was a compelling and completely new system of training. The mixing of the best techniques for striking, trapping and grappling from each art they studied, as well as developing training methods to perfect these, made this new ‘art’ a very dynamic and complete system – renowned for its economy of motion.

Jun Fan Gung Fu/JKD is a mix of high-energy kickboxing drills, intricate trapping, locking and in-fighting and occasional ground tactics. These classes are a great workout and extremely fun. Feel free to drop in for a session.

We had a great grading for our Karate students on the 14th April and I am pleased to say that everyone passed. We are going to start working on your next sets of syllabus work from May.

Mixed Arts

This class has really progressed through the Kali single stick system during March, for April we are focussing on the double stick Kali training and re-focusing on the Muay Thai MKG Method with kick and cover drills and close range striking.

YouTube Videos

I have added a couple more videos to the clubs youtube and links to those can be found below. I will be adding more information here in the next few weeks.

This is a video about how to use motions from Karate kata to defend against a blunt weapon attack.

Here is a small preview of our Thursdays Mixed Arts and family Karate Classes.

Trapping and Grappling Seminar

On Sunday 3rd June, I will be teaching a seminar around trapping and grappling concepts found within karate kata.

We will look at common principles throughout the day and see how various kata demonstrate these principles. The day will cover entering techniques, trapping and clearing obstructions, joint locks and chokes/strangles.

This will be an interesting day for both advanced students and beginners. You do not to be a karate student to attend the seminar, students of all martial arts are welcome, and the techniques taught throughout the day will be applicable to all martial arts styles.

The seminar will cost just £25 per person.

Changes to grading sheets

Filming will soon be starting on the new syllabus DVD’s and I will confirm with everyone when these are available to purchase or download. I am hoping to get these out sooner rather than later.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I will have more content added from next month if there is anything you would like to see in these newsletters Kata performance or bunkai videos, the link between karate and kali etc. please let me know and I will do my best to get any question included in the next newsletter.
