March 2018 Newsletter

Hi everyone,

Here is our March newsletter and I hope you are all well. Our classes are going from strength to strength with lots of new members and the ladies classes are going amazingly well. I am going to outline here the plan for our classes over the next month leading up to our next club grading.

Contents:

  1. Ladies Kickboxing
  2. Karate
  3. Mixed Arts
  4. New Club T-shirts
  5. Seminars
  6. Changes to grading sheets

Ladies Kickboxing

So far this year we have looked at long range punching a kicking and short-range Thai boxing style workouts. During March, we’re going to be focusing on some Jeet Kune Do kickboxing drills covering both long and short range striking.

Karate

Our karate classes are going to continue the theme that we’ve been working on with self-protection training, sparring and padwork training. Everyone in both the adult only and family classes are progressing really well and I have booked a venue for our next grading date on 14th April 2018 and details for this will handed out over the next few classes.

Mixed Arts

Our mixed arts classes so far this year have focussed on JKD and Muay Thai, so our plan for March is to focus on Kali training. We will be looking at some basic footwork and weaponry training (blunt and edged) with disarm training too.

New Club T-shirts

In our last newsletter, I said we were about to order some new t-shirts with a new logo. These have now been ordered and will be with us soon. We have a new logo that will be printed on the back of the t-shirts, which I think you will all like.

Seminars

I mentioned in the last newsletter about the “Mittmaster” seminar. This was a great day which started out with some basic boxing style training to make sure everyone punches were straight and retracting and also to make sure head movement was being done and effective. We then moved on to punch destructions using the head, elbows, hands and knees. The seminar then moved on to lower body training and looked a short kicking routine that looked at angles and styles of the roundhouse kick. As a natural progression from this, we then looked at kick destructions using the elbows and knees. The fourth subject of the day was looking at the leg stomp / oblique kick and follow-ups, and the final session of the day looked at takedowns and follow-ups.

I also taught a couple of pad drills as a warm-up for the seminar, we first looked at a JKD punch and return drill. Then we had a drill, which started as pre-emptive strike and then progressed depending on the reaction from the opponent (Pad Holder). The first response was a cover of the pad which signified a cover on the head, a “hanging arm” that indicates an obstruction which needs to be cleared before we can successfully strike again, the third response was for the pad holder to hit back which was countered by the striker and the final response for this drill was for the pad holder to tackle the striker who would counter that offensive motion and be abe to keep dominance over the situation.

A video of this drill has been uploaded to YouTube and can be seen below.

Changes to grading sheets

A lot of people have recently been asking for videos of Kata or pair works so students can watch and practice at home. Due to this, I am in the process of making a series of DVD’s which people can buy instead of using the paper manuals I have been handing out. I’m hoping to get these out sooner rather than later and will let everyone know when they are available. I have started to put pen to paper in organising these DVD’s, which were mentioned in the latest newsletter and hope for filming to start soon.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I will have more content added from next month if there is anything you would like to see in these newsletters Kata performance or bunkai videos, the link between karate and Kali etc please let me know and I will do my best to get any question included in the next newsletter.

If you would like to host me for a seminar, are interested in any of our classes or if you would like to have to some private training I can be contacted at andrew@armartialarts.co.uk or by telephone on 07929989720

See you all again soon and take care 🙂
