Your first class is an introduction, not a test. Wear comfortable sports clothing, arrive ready to listen and move, and expect the instructor to help you understand the class structure at a suitable pace.
Starting martial arts can feel like stepping into an unfamiliar world, but a first class should make that world easier to understand. You are not expected to arrive fit, flexible or already familiar with the techniques.
Before you arrive
Choose comfortable sports clothing and make sure the academy has confirmed which session fits your age or programme. AR Martial Arts has separate pathways for ages 5–7, ages 8–11, adults aged 12 and over, and Wado Ryu Karate.
Arriving a little early gives you time to find the training area and speak with the instructor before the class begins.
During the class
A martial arts class normally moves through a clear sequence: preparation, movement or technical practice, focused drills and a finish. The exact content depends on the programme.
Younger children’s sessions use age-appropriate movement, listening and coordination. Older children work through progressive martial arts and self-defence skills. Adult Martial Arts draws on Thai boxing, Jeet Kune Do and Kali, while the karate pathway focuses on Wado Ryu practice.
The important point is that a first session is an introduction. Listen, ask when something is unclear and work at an appropriate level.
After the class
Use the free week to notice more than the techniques. Ask yourself whether the coaching is clear, whether the atmosphere feels supportive and whether the programme gives you or your child a reason to look forward to the next class.
That is the real value of trying the academy before deciding: you can make the choice from experience rather than guesswork.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need martial arts experience before my first class?
No. AR Martial Arts welcomes complete beginners, and the free week is designed to help you experience the class before making a longer commitment.
What should I wear to a trial class?
Comfortable sports clothing that allows free movement is suitable. The academy can explain any uniform or equipment requirements after you have tried the programme.
